Prickly Pears are the fruit of the Prickly Pear cactus. They grow here in Italy! Unbelievably, I’ve even spotted some on the streets here in Empoli, Tuscany.
If you can get hold of them, give them a go! Variety, as they say, is the spice of life, and this fruit really brings such wonderful colour and flavour to a smoothie.
Be careful though – they have spines! I learnt a special way to get into them while I was in Sicily which will leave your hand spine-free – I promise! Watch my video here to see step by step how to enjoy this wonderful fruit without the pain.
As promised in the film, here are the details of my favourite prickly pear smoothie. As with all my smoothie recipes, it makes 2 glasses.
Ingredients:
2 prickly pears
½ a small pineapple
Juice of ½ a lime
c. 8 lettuce leaves (I use ‘Romana’ lettuce here, the nearest equivalent is Romaine)
Equipment:
Blender
Difficulty:
Easy (once you’ve got into the pears!)
Method:
- Using the method in my video de-skin the prickly pears. Roughly slice them and put them into the blender.
- Remove the skin and core from the pineapple and chop it roughly before adding to the blender along with the lime juice. (If you don’t have a high powered blender you should blend the fruit together now before adding the lettuce and blending again.)
- Wash the lettuce leaves and break them up roughly with your hands. Add to the blender.
- Blend the ingredients until thoroughly combined.
